Nov 20: The cumulative final exam
is on Saturday, December 20 at 9.30am in FR 103. As you know, the
financial statement analysis project is due on December 4. The final
quiz will be given on the week we return from Thanksgiving break.
Nov 13: I've posted powerpoint
slides for the liabilities and bonds payable topics we've covered.
Please note that the interest expense numbers in these slides are
calculated using the "effective interest" method, which is the
material in Appendix B that we will not be covering (therefore, if
it confuses you, you should skip it). The same goes for the "detour"
on time value of money concepts.
Nov 10: Quiz on Thursday for
chapters 9 and 10. Practice quizzes for chapter 9 have been
uploaded. No practice quizzes for chapter 10, but you can refer to
practice exam #2 for that material.
Oct 27: Please
right-click here
to download the evaluation form I was talking about during class.
Lastly, I've also uploaded some slides for Chapter 9
material.
Oct 17: The latest version of our
inventory class notes have been uploaded, so download that document
again. I've also uploaded solutions to quiz #2. As we've talked
about in class, the exam is on Thursday, October 23. Cell phones are
NOT allowed during the exam, so please bring a calculator. There
will be NO makeup exams. Class on this Monday (Oct 20) will finish
off some miscellaneous topics in chapter 5, and then we will start
the topics in chapter 9 (we are skipping chapters 7 & 8). I will NOT
be having office hours on Thursday, the day of the exam, so please
try to ask me questions as soon as possible.
Oct 10: Lots of new uploads
today. First, class notes to the inventory concepts. As before,
class notes are uploaded for both sections (2.30pm and 4.00pm); I
encourage you to download both of them since I try to use different
numbers in each class. So this is a key example of how seeing
different numbers used for the same concepts can help solidify your
learning. Second, I've uploaded some Powerpoint slides for inventory
that you may want to go over.
Third, we've got practice exams up.
Practice exam #1 includes concepts from Chapters 1-4. The inventory
chapters (5-6), however, are included separately in Practice exam
#2, which I've also uploaded, so you'll have to download those
separately. Please note: Only the inventory-related topics in
Practice exam #2 will be tested on the upcoming quiz and exam; you
can ignore the other material that is in Practice exam #2.
Oct 7: Some announcements about
some events coming up, which you can register for on CBAACCESS:
1. PwC's xtreme Tax Challenge.
Students are asked to form teams of 5, they are given a case to
solve (business solutions), and then present in front of PwC
partners. This is a great way to learn teamwork, thinking outside of
the box, presentation skills and networking. Everything takes places
on this campus, no need for travel. The dates are as follows:
Kickoff Date: 10/28/2008 Presentation Date: 11/11
2. Mario Gabelli, Founder and
President of, Gabelli Funds (GAMCO) will be speaking on Tuesday,
November 11th, 5:30-6:30pm. Great way for students to get an insight
into what's happening in today's market, what are hedge funds and
how to prepare themselves within today's economy.
Oct 6: Below, I've listed some
tentative dates to keep in mind. As we've discussed, we will be
dropping the lowest quiz in determining your course grade. Also note
that there are no (none zero zilch nada) makeup exams.
Oct 16: Quiz #2 (chapters 4-6)
Oct 23: Midterm exam (chapters 1-6)
Dec 4: Financial Statement Analysis project
Dec 20: Final exam (cumulative)
Sept 29: Solutions to quiz #1
have been uploaded, as have class notes for the entire accounting
cycle. As mentioned earlier, you need a special program to read the
notes, which you can download from the links provided in the Sept 15
posting.
Sept 24: An announcement from the
Dean: "Next week (Sep 29 to Oct 3) is "Access Your Future Week",
CBA's Career Week on the Rose Hill campus. We are asking the
students to wear business casual to class and to attend as many of
our guest lectures as possible. Students who comply with the request
will be entered into a raffle for some great prizes. Please join the
business casual bandwagon and attend the events we have planned.
Please have all students register for the events via CBAACCESS."
out the flyer for more info.
Sept 20: If you'd like a very
good, quick summary of what's been going on with the financial
crisis you keep hearing about,
click here. I've also posted practice quizzes.
Sept 16: Three internships
available that I am passing along to you. Right-click accordingly:
Accounting/Finance,
Marketing,
General
Sept 15: I've updated the
spreadsheet, so feel free to download it again. I've also included a
link for the (publisher-provided) solutions to the assigned homework
problems. Lastly, I've uploaded the class notes that we took today.
They are in a format called "Windows Journal". To read the document,
you will have to download a program called the "Windows Journal
Viewer". You can do this in one of three ways: (1) by
right-clicking here
to download a virus-free version, or (2)
click here to directly download from the Microsoft website, or
(3)
click here to search for alternative downloading options.
Sept 11: As promised, I've
uploaded the spreadsheet we were working on today (re: transaction
analysis). Right-click on your section time in the downloads
section.
Also, feel free to start emailing me with your three
company picks for the project -- make sure the company is a publicly
traded company! So far, Disney, Google, Coca-Cola, Whole Foods,
Apple, Dell and Stryker are taken. Lastly, start thinking about
something "unique" about you so you won't be put on the spot when I
call on you...
Sept 9:
Some repeat downloads. I've added "suggested homework problems" to the
syllabus, so please download the document again using the links
provided. I've also uploaded the 2008 version of the financial
statement project, so please download that, as well. Lastly, slides
for chapters 2 and 3 have also been posted.
Sept 6:
As discussed in class (and in the syllabus), we'll be using the
textbook Financial Accounting (6th ed) by Weygandt, Kimmel
and Kieso. For purchasing options from the publisher's site,
click here. On Monday, we'll start going through the major
themes in Chapter 1. Meanwhile, feel free to browse through the
"Financial project" by
right-clicking here (or at the link to your right), which will
be worth 15% of your course grade. Stay tuned for a possible update
of this project...
Sept 3:
Welcome back from summer break -- and welcome to the first day of
class (for both of us!). Please bookmark this page, because we'll be
using it as our primary source of communication throughout the
semester. (We will not be using BlackBoard at all.) Please download
the syllabus for the course by
right-clicking
here, or at the link in the Downloads section of the page to
your right. Read the document carefully, because I view it as a
contract between us. We'll talk more about it during class. Hope to
see you there!
